Once your flowers are delivered to you, what do you do with them? How do you take care of them? You want them to last as long as possible, right?

Most cut flowers last 4-7 days but can last up to 10 with the proper care. First, don’t set them on the TV where it’s warm or near a vent, a fan or direct sunlight.  Fresh floral arrangements do best in a cool place between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

With a floral arrangement that is inserted in floral foam, make sure the foam stays wet.  Check it daily and if you get a packet of floral food from the florist for the flowers, mix it with water according to directions. Do not dilute the solution.

Some people use home solutions to make the flowers last longer, such as bleach, copper pennies, sugar or aspirin. Real Simple Magazine did a test to see which strategy worked best to prolong the life of fresh flowers.  Some things worked better than others but the floral food worked best, so if you get some with your arrangement, be sure to use it.

If you are using the floral food with cut flowers, dump the water with the mixture if you notice it becomes cloudy and mix up a new batch for the flowers.

When changing the flower food, cut about an inch off the bottoms of the stems.

When picking flowers for your arrangement, look for buds about ready to open. If they are already open, make sure the petals are firm and not droopy. The leaves should not have spots or have started to yellow.

If your roses start to wilt, you can try to revive them by laying them down horizontally in a sink of warm water.  Cut an inch off the bottom of the stem while it is under the water. Let it sit in there for several hours and let the water cool. This may work unless the rose is just  too old. It’s worth a try.

If you receive boxed roses or other boxed flowers without a vase,  you can make a beautiful arrangement on your own.

Make sure you use a clean vase for your flowers to thwart the growth of bacteria.  Strip the leaves off the stems that will be below the water level.

You can place some clean marbles or stones in the bottom of the vase to help support the stems if needed.  Tie a ribbon around the neck of the bottle to fancy it up a little.

Your tallest flowers, from tip of flower to the bottom of stem, should be twice as long as the vase. Depending on how large the arrangement will be, put the longest flowers in the back for small arrangements or in the middle for larger arrangements. Criss-cross the stems to make a grid and help hold your smaller flowers in place. Add your other flowers and fill in with foliage and  filler flowers such as baby’s breath.

Flowers make such a difference in our rooms and in our moods. It’s worth it to find a way to have fresh flowers in your home year around, isn’t it?
